Pax Historia

Pax Historia

The first AI-powered grand strategy platform

Winter 2026ActiveConsumerGamingArtificial IntelligenceMarketplaceConsumerGamingSan Francisco, CA, USA
Pax Historia is an alternate-history sandbox game where players choose a country, a moment in time, and rewrite the course of history. What if Rome never fell? What if the Soviet Union survived? What if Genghis Khan ruled for another generation? We go beyond history, too. What if aliens invaded Earth? What if you were a college dropout creating a tech startup? The ability to create, edit, and copy custom maps, actors, historical context, and more means that users can play nearly any scenario they can imagine. In the last four months we've organically built a passionate fanbase of tens of thousands of daily active players and we're excited to expand on this early start. Consider joining us to help build vastly better tools for creators and experiences for players.

Verdict

Low Signal
Market Opportunity
Consumer gaming is a notoriously brutal market with massive distribution moats held by Steam, Epic, and mobile app stores. The grand strategy/alternate history niche (think Paradox games: Hearts of Iron, Victoria 3) has a passionate but relatively small TAM. Monetization path is unclear — no pricing page visible, no subscription model described. The 'sandbox AI game' category is unproven at scale for monetization.

Both Eli Bullock-Papa and Ryan Zhang are Virginia Tech CS students graduating 2025/2026 — effectively fresh grads with minimal professional experience. Eli's most notable prior role was a 3-month Capital One internship; Ryan's background is CS coursework and hackathons. However, Ryan's Qing Dynasty Simulation Project hit 13K subscribers, and together they've been building Pax Historia since April 2024 — the product traction (if real) is their strongest credential. Z Fellows recognition for both adds minor signal.
Low Signal
Competition
Paradox Interactive owns this genre with decades of polish and massive communities around HOI4, CK3, and Victoria 3. AI Dungeon and similar text-based sandbox tools compete on the narrative side. No competitor data was provided, but the incumbent strength in grand strategy gaming is formidable. An AI wrapper on top of an already-competitive genre is a tough moat to build.
Medium Signal
Product
Website is currently throwing a client-side application error and is inaccessible, which is a bad look. However, the founders claim hundreds of thousands of users and 'tens of thousands of daily active players' scaled organically in under 3 months post-August 2025 launch — if accurate, this is real traction. No press coverage, no visible pricing, no API docs to verify claims independently.
OverallC Tier

Pax Historia has a genuinely interesting hook and the claimed DAU numbers (tens of thousands) are the strongest signal here — organic growth to hundreds of thousands of users in 3 months would be legitimately impressive if verifiable. The core problem: two fresh Virginia Tech grads with minimal industry experience taking on Paradox Interactive in a genre that rewards 20+ years of polish and deep modding communities. Consumer gaming is one of the worst markets for a YC startup — low margins, high CAC, difficult monetization, and no enterprise angle. The website crashing during evaluation is a basic execution red flag. They need to convert that fanbase to paying customers fast and show a defensible monetization model before the novelty wears off.
