An AI System for Institutional Trading Desks

Winter 2026ActiveFintechArtificial IntelligenceFintechAnalyticsMarket ResearchTrading
Axis is building an AI Trading System, allowing a trader to deploy models that monitor and analyze relevant markets and strategies. We've chosen commodities as our first market. Commodities make up a third of global goods exports, and physical commodities traders decide the movement and storage of metals, agricultural products, and energy across the globe. They trade in public markets and bilateral OTC agreements. Engaging in these markets is complexing, covering derivatives positioning, refinery data, storage inventory, import/exports, geopolitical events and more. Axis is building an AI driven analytical layer for these markets.

High Signal
Market Opportunity
Commodities trading desks at institutions manage trillions in exposure; analytical tooling for these desks commands high ACVs ($100K–$1M+). Physical commodities trading is genuinely complex (derivatives, OTC, refinery data, geopolitics) and underserved by modern AI tooling. Clear ICP: institutional commodity trading desks. B2B enterprise fintech with strong monetization path via SaaS or data licensing.

Eric Zhu has legitimate quant trading credentials: TransMarket Group (basis trading, 2024), RBC Capital Markets (2023), and Paradigm working under Head Trader (2025) — real sell-side and prop shop experience. Ian Wang interned at Virtu Financial on the options desk (2023) and briefly at Akuna Capital (Aug-Oct 2025, 3 months) before founding Axis. Both are recent grads (Yale '25, UChicago BS Math) with short stints — no multi-year seniority, no previous exits, but the domain exposure to commodities trading is directly relevant.
Medium Signal
Competition
No competitor data surfaced in research, but incumbents include Bloomberg Terminal, Refinitiv/LSEG, Kpler, Vortexa, and OilX in commodities data/analytics. These are large, entrenched players with proprietary data moats. Axis's differentiation appears to be AI-native custom models per desk rather than generic data feeds — meaningful but unproven against well-funded incumbents. No direct AI-native commodities modeling startup identified as a head-on competitor.
Medium Signal
Product
Website shows specific commodity verticals (Crude Oil, Refined Products, LNG, LPG) with feature descriptions suggesting real product depth, and a 'Sign in' button implies something is live. However, no named customer logos with testimonials, no pricing page, no specific revenue/usage metrics — just 'Explore a Pilot' CTA. Founder logos from Jane Street, Akuna, Virtu, RBC appear as team pedigree markers, not customer references.
OverallB Tier

Axis has the right domain targeting — commodities desks are a high-value, underserved niche where incumbents (Bloomberg, Kpler, Vortexa) are data-rich but not AI-native in the custom model sense. The founders have real but shallow trading pedigree: Eric's TransMarket and RBC stints plus Ian's Virtu internship are credible signals, but both are essentially fresh grads with sub-1-year tenures at each role and no exits. The product shows meaningful vertical specificity (LNG, LPG, crude, refined products) suggesting real domain thinking, but there's no evidence of paying customers, revenue, or even named pilot clients yet. The incumbents have massive proprietary data advantages that will be hard to overcome without either superior data access or extremely tight workflow integration. If they can land even one named institutional pilot with measurable outcomes, this becomes an A.
